After recent scandals, I have become skeptical of the native missionary movement. I have been supporting native missionaries for decades now, but these scandals have really burnt my trust. Thank you for addressing trust and accountability in Prayerline letter.

A Season of Divine Appointments

September 2016

Dear Friend in the Harvest,

Our Lord leads perfectly. He works ahead of schedule, and in those moments when we’re waiting, He is moving and working behind the scenes. He knows the seasons. As we listen and act upon His divine appointments—even when it seems impossible or we don’t understand—we can see Him transform nations.

Listen carefully. This may be your season for a divine appointment.

Heeding the Lord’s Call

From 2012 to 2014 Slavik, an evangelist, together with an indigenous ministry based in Siberia, answered God’s call to send youth to place New Testaments in the hands of people in every village in Russia which had no church of any kind.

These teams distributed 250,000 New Testaments in the summer-long evangelistic effort that saw thousands of souls come to Christ. We want to thank the many of you who generously supported the Spirit-led mission through Christian Aid as we partnered with Slavik.

The people were desperate to hear about Christ Jesus. Many in the atheistic country wept when they discovered there was a God who loved them and sent His only Son to die for their sins. An elderly woman said she’d waited her whole life to hear the truth; now tears spilled from her eyes as she held a New Testament for the first time. It was like gold. It was like bread for a starving soul. A couple in a remote area said they’d just prayed that, if there was a God, He would send a missionary. Young missionaries soon showed up with New Testaments and the Good News.

God’s timing is perfect. It demands swift action. As the zeal of the Lord consumed Slavik, he knew time was of the essence.

“We must deliver Bibles now,” the evangelist said at that time, “while the door is still open. We don’t know how long we have. But when I see my Lord, I want to say I did everything I could to make His name known and bring Him glory.”

The “Summer-for-Jesus” teams accomplished their mission, leaving four New Testaments in every unchurched village in Russia.

Who knew then – when youth were cycling village-to-village delivering God’s Word – that the door for the gospel would close just three summers later?

The Lord knew.

The Door Closed—But the Gospel Seed Was Planted

In July of 2016 – just this summer – a new law was passed to limit terrorism. But it also limits the spread of the gospel. Anyone found preaching must serve years in prison. No Bibles may be distributed except in a building owned by a church.

The Lord led Christian Aid to partner with Slavik before anyone knew the events that would take place in Russia just a few short years later. The Lord knew the door would close. He held the strategy to release His Word all across the Former Soviet Union—that the seeds would be planted, grow and bear fruit. He just needed a “yes” from His people—a “yes” that resulted in action.

Divine Appointments Change the World

Similarly, Dr. Bob Finley, founder of Christian Aid more than 60 years ago, obeyed the Lord, and his “yes” changed the way we do missions. With a heart for China, Finley went there to win students to Christ. But the communists took over and suddenly all foreign missionaries had to leave. Indigenous ministries remained to do the work of spreading the gospel.

Upon arrival back in the United States, Finley followed the prompting of the Holy Spirit to start what he later called Christian Aid Mission—a ministry that sends fi nancial support to native missionaries, particularly in areas of persecution and poverty.

Because of Finley’s divine appointment in China, the world of missions is being revolutionized, and native missionaries are fi nding deep empowerment to do what God has called them to do among their own people.

As we work to fuel the Spirit-led work of Kingdom leaders like Slavik, who has preached for 44 years, since age 14, we’ll see God’s purposes and plans unfold for the nations.

Your Time

Today may be your divine appointment to join us in the vision of advancing the gospel to the ends of the earth, fulfi lling the task of Matthew 24:14. We have created the Finishing the Task Fund (098FTT) for these divine appointments—so miracles can happen and lives change as we are able to respond when a leader like Slavik says: “Now is the time for Bibles in Russia—so every village may know Christ Jesus. Heaven is for people. But hell is for the devil.”

Join us in this vision. The revolution is triumphant, and we can advance the gospel with your support.

Until there is a witness for our Lord in every nation,
