After recent scandals, I have become skeptical of the native missionary movement. I have been supporting native missionaries for decades now, but these scandals have really burnt my trust. Thank you for addressing trust and accountability in Prayerline letter.

From Our President

January 2017

Dear Friend in the Harvest,

Thank you for your partnership in finishing the task.

As you invest in God's kingdom, your gifts empower native workers to fulfill the Great Comission. You fuel the finishing of the task in nation after nation.

In India, more than 2,000 people groups still need a witness for Christ, and native missionaries are working in unity to bring the gospel to them, no matter the difficulty.

In Ukraine, war has blasted open the gates for the gospel as hearts cry out in need, and native workers are there with the comfort of Christ.

In Turkey, countless Muslim refugee families desperately seek salvation; indigenous ministries are reaching them with bread, blankets, Bibles and hope.

In China, increased persecution has driven native gospel workers to their knees as they reach unreached ethnic groups. The Lord makes a way where there is no way.

Indeed we live in a strategic time for missions. We ride a magnificent wave of His glory covering the earth as the gospel advances across the nations. Nothing can stop this wave. The Lord of Hosts—the unrelenting Lover of souls—is pursuing a people after His heart from among every tribe, tongue and nation.

Imagine the voices of millions of fellowships, large and small, singing praises in myriad languages to our beautiful King. In the next decade, every tongue could cry, “Worthy is the Lamb!”

In Nepal, a young man believed Christianity belonged only to westerners. He fell ill and tried every means of healing, until he no longer could pay for the next remedy. He visited shamans and hospitals, but his eyes continued to worsen until he was nearly blind. “I sacrificed many animals to appease the spirits,” he said. “I visited many doctors, but nothing helped.” Finally, a neighbor invited him to church. “I wanted physical healing, but the Christians kept talking about spiritual healing. Soon the love and care of Christians won me over. I realized, more than healing, I needed forgiveness and peace with God through Christ. I have decided to follow the Lord Jesus.”

In Bangladesh, a native missionary entered an unreached village and started an adult literacy school for the poor. “Besides teaching them to read, I told them about the Lord Jesus and His sacrifice for people,” the missionary said. “I also taught them about prayer, and many sick people were healed through their prayers.” In six months, 25 people in this village were baptized because of the worker’s faithfulness.

In Peru, a native missionary goes house to house teaching the Bible in the homes of new believers, where children also gather to hear the message of salvation. “As the Lord provides, I prepare a meal for them once a week,” he said. “I prayed for a girl who was badly abused and had spun into a deep depression. The Lord has delivered her, and she has found a hope and future in Christ. She also shares her testimony with other young people, and they are coming to the Lord.”

As the Holy Scriptures say: “One generation shall praise thy works to another, and shall declare thy mighty acts” (Psalm 145:4).

A great wave of gospel advance calls for great fervency in prayer.

Ministries and churches from across denominations gather in pockets across the globe to pray for the completion of the Great Commission in their own nations—that every unreached people group would have a witness for Christ among them.

We also pray daily, with vision, agreeing for every tribe and nation to know the Lord. Yes, we groan inwardly, as Paul wrote in Romans 8, for the sons of God to be revealed. The whole earth groans—and the seeds of prayer planted deeply bring forth a harvest of souls.

And as we pray, we are moved to get behind those on the frontlines of missions. They need our prayers and support to finish the task—to press through persecution and poverty to bring life and light to those living in darkness.

Our prayers and provision keep them going. It is as if we stand with them, support them, and hold up their arms, knowing well that the battle belongs to the Lord.

We praise God for you, our prayer partners in the harvest. As His kingdom extends into the darkest regions, let’s band together in prayer and sow intentionally to finish the task. Our Lord Jesus is returning for His people from every tongue and nation.

How amazing one day to see the faces and eyes of the ones your prayers and finances helped to reach!

So pray mightily! Give extravagantly! In doing so, you lay up eternal treasures!

Until there is a witness for Christ in every nation,
