About Iran

Iran is the heart of the former Persian Empire and is a central desert ringed by mountains. It is home to 97 People Groups, 87 of whom remain unreached according to the Joshua Project. The dominant People Group is the Persians. Prior to the Arab invasions, the Persian religion was Zoroastrianism. This religion taught that there was an eternal struggle between the forces of good and evil. Shiite Islam became the national religion of Iran in the sixteenth century, at which time the ulama (clergy) began playing an important role in both the social and political lives of the people. Iran is nominally a democracy but is in fact controlled by the clerics who remain loyal to the Radical Shi´ism espoused by the Ayatollah Khomeini; the tension between the populace of Iran and their rulers is high.
