About Russia

Russia is the world´s largest country with a landmass of 17,075,400 sq km containing 175 distinct people groups, 87 of which are considered unreached. The largest people group is the Russians also known as the Russ, the majority of whom are nominally Christian. The second largest people group is the Tatar who have their own language also called Tatar although many can also speak Russian. The Tatar people are predominately Muslims with some unique practices and beliefs that are holdovers from their pre-Islamic culture. Even though it is once again legal to be Christian there are many factors which inhibit the growth of evangelism. The Russian Orthodox has used its special status to limit the growth of other denominations while belief in the occult and other false teachings flourish.
