Rendille woman leading musical celebration in Kenya.

Songbirds Taking Flight

An ethnic Rendille woman leads other women in musical celebration of new life in Christ in northern Kenya. Typically women in pastoralist tribes are expected to do only unpaid labor – including building their houses, looking for firewood and carrying water, besides caring for children and home. Christianity has given them freedom to think beyond cultural expectations; the ministry that planted this church gives tribal women the opportunity to provide income for their families with micro-enterprise grants. Among other small businesses, the women use the grants to buy beans to make necklaces and bracelets, which they then sell to tourists and others.
