Preparing to Serve in China

Children of the Miao ethnic group in central China do not let natural disasters and poverty keep them from having fun with a make-shift ping pong table at a temporary school for earthquake victims. There a locally-based ministry teaches them a variety of skills, from reading to washing hands. The ministry helps orphans and families devastated by earthquakes with survival subsidies, education, arrangements for medical treatment and services for special needs children. “The government feels good that we´re really caring for the children,” ministry director Qiang Li says. With 20 co-workers in three districts, the ministry also sponsors kindergartens and a mobile educational unit that travel over dangerous mountainous roads offering children hygiene and living skills training as well as educational guidance.
