Trench Warfare

Those building the Kingdom of God in the Philippines are engaged in spiritual battles involving Islamist terrorists, communist rebels, principalities and powers — and muddy roads. Besides blocking the spread of God's word, a mired vehicle in a sodden mountain jungle, such as this van in Mindanao, can leave evangelists vulnerable to militants and bandits. The leader of a ministry providing filtered water, food, medicine and the gospel to tribal animists and Muslims in Mindanao says his greatest need is prayer for God's protection. "There's a saying, 'What are you going to do with the mail if the mailman is not there anymore?'" he said. "This is a spiritual battle. They have the powerful guns, and the power of the devil, and the spirit of the devil is in them. The main way to repel this is spiritual also, and the word of God. We have so many attacks." Along with spiritual tools, the ministry requires material equipment such as generators to power evangelistic campaigns, motorcycles and bicycles, as well as funds for repairs and vocational training in carpentry and farming for pastors to be self-sustaining.
