Tuareg Tribesmen

The Tuareg

A nomadic desert people of approximately 1.5 million, the Tuareg tribe has been wandering the Sahara since the eighth century. Today they can be found throughout Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso, Chad, Algeria and Libya. These fierce Sunni Muslim people have been fertile recruiting ground for Islamic terrorist groups. In past decades they have led rebellions, and most recently in northern Mali where they attempted to declare an independent Tuareg nation before being ousted by another terrorist group. Christian Aid-assisted Life in Jesus Ministries in Niger has led several Tuaregs to Christ, while meeting some of their basic needs in this famine-stricken country.
