China Earthquake Impacts China's Ministries

August 8, 2008

Freddie Sun, Director of the China Division at Christian Aid, has received several reports on how the worst earthquake in three decades has impacted indigenous ministries assisted through Christian Aid. The epicenter of the 8.2 magnitude earthquake in Sichuan Province radiated outward, causing disturbances to areas as far-reaching as Taiwan and Beijing.

This is a critical time for sharing the gospel among a people who are not only suffering from physical or material needs, but also despairing over the loss of loved ones. Hundreds of dedicated students and teachers have been going into disaster areas solely to impart the comfort found by accepting Christ and receiving the Holy Spirit.

These ministries in the West China provinces have been focusing on unreached Muslims, Tibetans and other tribal groups. Prior to the earthquake Christian Aid had been helping to build up Bible schools. Much headway had been made, but because of the damages, restoration or rebuilding will be needed before continued growth can resume. Freddie Sun estimates the costs will far exceed $200,000 for this area alone.

Ark Tibetan Handicapped Orphanage is helping to care for children who lost parents in the quake.
The Ark Tibetan Handicapped Orphanage continues to receive new orphans due to the earthquake. Twenty-seven of the 100 new orphans have been received by the Ark to date. The quota is expected to be reached as soon as more roadways open up.

Funds will be needed to accommodate this influx of orphans, which includes new bunk beds, equipment, supplies, and other expenses. Monthly support is also needed to feed and care for these children.

Pray for the hundreds of thousands of souls needing Christ – and for our brethren laboring in the midst of this catastrophe to reach them. They all desperately need our help.

"For the mountains shall depart, and the hills be removed; but my kindness shall not depart from thee, neither shall the covenant of my peace be removed, saith the LORD that hath mercy on thee."
Isaiah 54:10
