Relief Updates from Orissa

March 1, 2010

We would like to provide you with an update about the on-going relief for the persecuted believers in Orissa, India. As you know this state was greatly impacted by the fundamental riots that took place against Christians in December 2007 and August 2008. Hundreds lost their lives and thousands found their houses and churches damaged or burned to the ground.

Although the relief efforts continue, there are many praises to share with you, who gave sacrificially for these victims.

One ministry leader writes,

“The Lord enabled us to provide rice, dal, cooking oil, eggs, sugar, tea and spices to 2000 families who walked from their various villages. Their houses were damaged during the period of religious violence and they do not have any source of income. Please pray for the on going distribution programs in Raikia, Godaguda, and G.Udayagiri districts.

A local church was attacked, broken, and burnt on August 2008. Believers had to flee from their houses to save their lives. Some of them had gone away because of fear. We prayed for them and visited them to encourage them. Now they have made a church, and on December 9th 2009 we dedicated the church for prayer and worship. We supplied sheets to cover the roof of the church. Now the believers are happy and they celebrated Christmas without fear. There are 16 families of believers coming for worship. We also had a lay leaders´ Bible study program. About 25 of them came from nearby churches. We gave them outlines to use in preaching during the Christmas season as they visit churches and various fellowship groups.”

Several more stories like these have been received by Christian Aid and each one gives thanks for your prayers and support. However, large numbers of victims are still living in tents and are in need of building materials and food assistance. Such loss they have faced, because they did not forsake their faith.
