Tribal Violence in Nigeria

July 21, 2011

An MCM missionary took these pictures of Kona villagers murdered in the Kona/Mumuye ethnic clashes. Villagers stand speechless and helpless as they gaze upon their slain neighbors and friends.

"The day was very hectic as we had to run to and fro to rescue many women and children who are the most affected and traumatized victims of the ethnic violence in Taraba State. This is especially sad since MCM has been having unprecedented success planting churches among both the Kona and the Mumuye tribes. We are praying that this terrible situation will open more doors for the gospel as we reach out to the suffering on both sides.

"At present, there are more than 1000 people affected. There are no humanitarian organizations to help because this has never happened before in the area, and people are afraid to go there. The government is heavily Mumuye and biased against the Kona, so we must act. So far we have distributed five bags of corn and four bags of rice. We need blankets, clothing, food, medicines, and temporary shelter for these people. It will cost thousands of US dollars to minister the help they need.

"Our missionaries on ground have calculated that in order to begin to help these people, we need nothing less than $9,000 for the above listed needs. We are thankful to Christian Aid that sent $3000 in emergency funds right away, and we are praying for Christians' hearts to be touched for the physical and spiritual sufferings of these two tribes. We are ready to help, but MCM has so little resources that alone, there is little we can do.

Thousands fled their villages and watched the destruction of homes from a hilltop.

"Thank you for standing with us. We know we can always count on Christian Aid to support us and advocate for our work. God bless you.
