Located in central Europe between Germany, Poland, Slovakia, and Austria, the landlocked Czech Republic is comprised of Bohemia in the west and Moravia in the east. Bohemia, with its rolling hills and mountains, is home to the capital city of Prague, considered one of the handsomest cities in Europe. Medieval castles and town centers, relics of the country’s 1,000-year-old history, dot the landscape. Moravia is known for industrial engineering and coalmining.
Czechs are linguistically similar to the Slovaks, with whom they shared a country from 1918 to 1992. While some of their ancestors were Christian reformers and missionaries, today’s Czechs mainly ascribe to atheism.
During the country’s communist era, atheism was the official government policy. Religious freedom was restored in 1989; however, today, almost nine-tenths of Czechs claim no religious affiliation. The remaining one-tenth are mostly adherents of Roman Catholicism. The Czech Republic is one of the top five most atheistic countries in the world.
Christian Aid Mission assists a small ministry that established a church in August 2024. Within only two months of the church opening, ministry leaders baptized two new believers. They currently have an average attendance of over 30 people and are working to create a stable congregation to become self-sustaining. They hold weekday Bible studies and conduct various outreach events.
“An ordinary Czech is distrustful and will not let a stranger near him nor will he just accept an invitation to a church,” the ministry leader said. “However, he will come when a person shows him love, is there for him, when we listen to him, and when he can trust us. This is our strategy and role: to be there for people when they need it, to bring them the light of Christ, and to get to know them. As soon as they believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, we use some well-known Bible courses to lead them to growth and multiplication.”
