North Africa

From the Atlantic shores of Mauritania in the West to the Red Sea in the East, North Africa is ethnically, culturally, and linguistically distinct from the rest of Africa. The Sahara Desert comprises much of North Africa, excluding the fertile regions along the northern Mediterranean coast and the Nile River in Egypt and Sudan.
Arabs from the Middle East conquered the region between the A.D. 600s and 1000s, bringing the Berbers and Egyptians who inhabited the area under Arabic and Muslim culture. Today, the population of this vast region is almost entirely Islamic. In most North African countries, sharing the gospel, holding a church meeting, or even owning a Bible is illegal. Believers risk imprisonment and physical harm, including death, for openly practicing their faith.
Christian Aid Mission assists indigenous ministries based in seven North African countries. These ministries are wisely and strategically discipling, training, and equipping believers to plant churches in their communities.
One ministry is providing online church-planter training to Muslim-background believers from a particularly restricted country. They are also reaching seekers through their website and social media, following up with all who express interest in the gospel and connecting them with their on-ground team for discipleship.
A total of 12 indigenous ministries in another country need assistance for evangelism and discipleship programs to train and equip hundreds of youth, pastors, and church leaders to work in areas that are unreached with the gospel.
Since the Arab Spring revolution, youth in North Africa have faced difficulties. Multiple ministries are reaching this vulnerable population through sports, leadership development programs, and vocational training. They have opened Christian kindergartens to reach both children and their mothers, in addition to holding conferences for families where the gospel is shared. Multiple ministries provide educational assistance to poor children. An indigenous ministry is finding success in sharing the gospel through its Christian primary school attended by 700 to 1,000 students in a 99.5-percent Islamic nation.
Other ministries throughout North Africa request help to provide for the needs of persecuted believers who have lost jobs or whose families have rejected them because of their faith, for poverty-stricken refugees who fled from war and terrorism, and for people displaced by natural disaster. Missionary support, Bibles, training, transportation, and gospel tools like projectors, musical instruments, computers, etc., are also among the most needed resources for effective outreach in North Africa.

How to Pray for North Africa

  • Pray that God would open the eyes of people in North Africa to the fallacy of Islam and lead them to Jesus Christ.
  • Pray for great wisdom and courage for indigenous missionaries sharing the gospel in areas where doing so might cost them their lives.
  • Pray that new, Muslim-background believers would stand firm in their faith and be discipled in God’s Word.

More stories from North Africa

Be the Hands and Feet of Christ in North Africa
A quarry worker and father of four connected with a local missionary who encouraged him to grow closer to God and attend church. “I started reading the Bible every day, and it has changed my life,” the man said. “I thank God for the ministry of the village workers and how they care for us.” Donations help support missionaries who are the light of Christ in their communities. Pray they will persevere in their service to the Lord.
Equip Believers to Share the Gospel in North Africa
College students and recent graduates recently participated in a ministry’s 21-day discipleship school to learn and grow in Christ. “We seek to equip leaders who understand the heart of God and are willing and capable of reaching out to others in their communities,” the ministry leader said. A donation of $25 or $50 supports such discipleship opportunities. Pray for the next generation of Christian workers.
Help Bring Hardened Hearts to Jesus in North Africa
When local missionaries visited a man known to have suffered many tragedies in life, he slammed the door in their faces. But they did not give up. On their third visit, the man decided to listen to them share the gospel and, over the following weeks, he began to read the Bible. Then, he gave his life to Christ. Donations support evangelism such as this. Pray that those with hardened hearts will receive the love of Jesus.
Provide Gospel Tools and Training in North Africa
A patient at a native ministry’s medical clinic despaired of ever being healed of a diabetic wound, and local missionaries read to her from John 5 the narrative of the invalid healed after 38 years. At the workers’ urging she prayed in Christ’s name, and she gained hope as healing advanced to miraculous stages. Through the clinic, a bookshop, literacy classes and personal visits, workers gave people the opportunity to know Christ. Donations are sought for the tools and means to proclaim the gospel and disciple new believers. Workers request prayer for protection from opposition.
Help Bring Muslims to Christ in North Africa
Muslims who once refused to listen to any talk of the gospel are asking native workers about their faith in Christ. The villagers have begun requesting prayer as they and their families need healing, work and other help. “We can see more people coming to the Lord in the last few months, praise God,” the ministry leader said. Workers are also engaging Muslims through social media and helping them to learn more about Christ. Donations are needed for such evangelistic outreach and follow-up. Pray for the safety of workers and secret Christians.
Help Build Strong Disciples in North Africa
A street vendor used to defraud customers until he received a visit from a local Christian worker who invited him to a gospel event, where the man prayed for forgiveness and accepted Christ. Every aspect of his daily life has changed as he has grown in the Lord. Ministering in both word and deed, workers who have led people to saving faith helped youths give up drugs and taught poor people job skills so they could earn a living. Donations of $25 or $50 are sought to proclaim Christ and teach new believers God’s will for their lives through discipleship. Pray more people will come to know God’s lovingkindness and redemptive power.
