Brazilian Christian missionary prays with men and women in wooden house

Gospel Finds Good Soil and Hard Ground in Brazil

A woman in a remote jungle village of Brazil learned half of the gospel by habitually partying and getting drunk.

Camila* didn’t need anyone to tell her that sin led to despair and spiritual death, because she had lived it by pursuing empty pleasures, a native Christian leader said.

“She said that it no longer gave her joy,” he said. “She was very sad and with great despair for the future of life, especially when she thought about man’s eternity.”

When Camila attended a local missionary’s house church meeting one Sunday morning, the message that humanity’s natural sinful state led to eternal perdition made perfect sense, the leader said. Then she heard the other half of the gospel.

“That morning she heard that even though people are sinful, God loves them and wants to change their lives,” the leader said. “She felt very amazed about God’s love and His promises, so that without much hesitation she decided to follow Jesus Christ. Today she is cheerful and a member of the local congregation.”

Most villagers are not so ready to hear or accept the gospel. At one jungle settlement, workers pray constantly for resistant villagers.

“Even though they show hardness of heart to receive the gospel message, we do not give up, because in every opportunity for dialogue, we present to them the best option of life, which is to become a child of God,” the leader said.

Workers shared the gospel in another village for more than 40 years without results – until last year.

“Their children and even the parents were addicted to alcoholic beverage that damaged families, and other young people became drug users,” the leader said. “But suddenly we have been surprised by miracles of conversion in the last five months. Now that they are part of God’s family, they have abandoned all worldly practices, especially parties and alcohol consumption. The new church has 30 people and many children and young people.”
