Jordan

With Christianity dating back to the first century A.D., the country east of the Jordan River and northeast of the Red Sea now has a population that is 96.3 percent Muslim. Of the 2.3 percent who identify as Christian, 61.8 percent are Orthodox and 18.4 percent Roman Catholic, with Protestants making up 10.7 percent.
The official language is Modern Standard Arabic, but most native Jordanians speak a dialect known as Jordanian Arabic, and English is the de facto language of business and has co-official status in schools and universities.
Native missionaries operate a theological seminary that has trained Christians for work in 19 Arab countries, as well as most of the evangelical pastors in Jordan. The seminary needs assistance to cover tuition for trainees and to help support graduates as they begin church planting in countries with high poverty and persecution.
Ministry leaders also seek help to cover costs of an online training program to help Muslim-background believers plant house churches in Islamic countries. Also sought is regular support for missionaries working in multiple native ministries. A ministry that trains leaders from countries throughout the Middle East helps equip children’s ministry workers and house-church leaders to reach their respective countries with the gospel.
Jordan has a high number of refugees, including Syrians, Iraqis, Lebanese, Yemenis and Libyans. One ministry provides Syrian and Iraqi refugees with aid, and its Christian school serves traumatized refugee children, including special teacher aides for those suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. This ministry thus provides a huge help to the children’s families. Workers need assistance for this ministry, which opens the doors for them to share the gospel with refugee families. A counseling and discipleship center for traumatized refugees also offers vocational training such as skills in sewing or hair dressing.

How to Pray for Jordan

  • Pray that leaders will continue to be trained online or otherwise for badly needed leadership in Middle Eastern countries.
  • Pray that growing signs of persecution of Christians in a country that has long lived peacefully with Christians would come to an end.
  • Pray that refugees would put their faith in Christ and find freedom to practice their new faith.

Help Transform Lives with the Gospel in Jordan
A young man who served as an assistant to the leader of a mosque came to a local ministry’s church to argue with congregational leaders about Christianity. Later going through severe hardship, he had a dream that Christ was bearing his pain and had transformed His suffering on the cross to glory. The man returned to the church, put his faith in Christ and left his job at the mosque. Workers have also seen people come to Christ in visits to their homes, at Bible studies and at church events, as well as through gospel presentations on Zoom. Donations of $25 or $50 are sought for such outreaches of evangelism and discipleship. They request prayer that more young men and women come to Christ.
Share Christ’s Love with Refugees in Jordan
A ministry’s medical clinic provides loving care to destitute refugees through free examinations and medications. After spending all of her savings on cancer treatment, an Ethiopian house cleaner learned the cancer had returned months later. Without money to pay for additional treatment, her tumor grew to the size of a football. When the ministry learned about her, they helped her find a surgeon and raised funds to pay for her surgery. They are now walking beside her during recovery and praise God there are no signs of recurrence or spread of the cancer. Donations are sought to help ministry workers meet refugees’ practical needs. Pray that many refugees would experience Christ’s love and salvation.
Extend Grace To Refugees in Jordan
An African refugee with severe health problems came to a native ministry’s medical clinic, where he was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease so advanced that he had to have both legs amputated. When the disease attacked his kidneys, ministry workers connected him with specialized doctors. They also frequently visited his home to read Scripture and pray with him. Because of these visits, the man chose to trust Jesus, despite his many challenges. “Since coming to the faith, he is the most joyful refugee I know in Jordan,” the ministry leader said. Donations of $35 or $70 help with such needs among refugees. Pray for medical ministries such as this as they serve refugees in their care.
Support Those Who Suffer In Jesus’ Name in Jordan
After a man chose to follow Christ, his family did not speak to him for six months. When he refused to return to Islam, they had him arrested. Another believer paid an attorney to get him released, but soon after, his family took away his tea and coffee business. “Finances are always difficult for him,” a native ministry leader said. The ministry has helped him with food and rent as well as discipled him and worked to keep him connected with the body of Christ. Donations of $50 or $100 help provide aid to persecuted believers. Pray for all those who suffer in Jesus’ name.
Encourage Christian Workers in Their Gospel Work in Jordan
A native missionary began leading a group of believers in a small house, and, for some time, only a few people attended, which frustrated the missionary. Then, one day, more people began to attend. “God’s response to my state of frustration was amazing,” the missionary said. The group outgrew the home where they met and now rents a space for regular meetings. “This is a step of faith,” the missionary said. “I laid it on the Lord who put on my heart this work, and He who started is able to complete.” Donations of $25 or $50 support evangelism and discipleship such as this. Pray believers will daily be encouraged in their fellowship together.
Support Those in Difficult Circumstances in Jordan
Pray Christ will be revealed through the provision of critical necessities to vulnerable families. The mother of a baby girl sought help from a local ministry because her baby was in the zero percentile for weight, height, and head circumference; her husband could not work because of health problems; they were evicted; and they often went without food or baby formula. The ministry, which also serves as a pre/post-natal ministry, provided medical care to the baby and her father, including specialist doctors for the baby; they provided them with food; and they regularly pray with the entire family. Your donations of $25 or $50 support ministries that supply critical aid such as this.
