Ecuador

Named after its position on the equator, Ecuador’s territory includes the famous Galapagos Islands and parts of the Amazon rainforest and Andes Mountains.
Its population of mixed European, Amerindian and Afroecuadorian descent traces back to Spanish conquest over the ruling Incas in the 16th century. The conquest also blended the religious landscape as small household statues of Roman Catholic saints replaced Inca gods. Today most Ecuadorians are Roman Catholic, while indigenous minorities typically practice ethnic religions such as animism. Of the 20 percent of Ecuadorians falling below the poverty line, indigenous, multiethnic, and rural populations are most affected.
Christian Aid Mission assists indigenous missionaries working among the ethnic and underprivileged peoples of Ecuador, particularly the Chachi people, a minimally reached ethnic group with an evangelical population of only 1.2 percent. Living in small villages along the rainforest river systems of Esmeraldas Province, the Chachi have suffered years of ostracism by society, unfair treatment from the government, and problems with land rights.
A native ministry has established a presence among 10 villages of Chachi and neighboring ethnic groups. Native missionaries visit the people hut by hut to pray with them and share the hope of Jesus Christ. They collect people by canoe for Sunday worship meetings, evangelistic meetings and Bible classes. As a result, villages once overrun by rampant witchcraft are now being transformed by the gospel of Jesus Christ.
Another ministry regularly visits five of the country’s prisons. Many prisoners have come to understand true forgiveness in Christ. As they are rehabilitated in God’s Word, they live peaceably as bright witnesses among their fellow prisoners, guards and government officials. The ministry has planted over eight thriving churches within the prison walls that serve over 450 believers.
In areas of extreme poverty and unemployment in the southern Machala region, a third ministry opened an elementary school after noticing children dropping out of school by the fifth grade to contribute to their struggling families. The education they receive, combined with Bible teaching and basic necessities of food and clothing, is helping to break generational cycles of illiteracy, delinquency and unemployment. As ministry workers have shared Christ with the children’s families and door-to-door in surrounding neighborhoods, the community has been transformed.

How to Pray for Ecuador

  • Pray that the light of Jesus Christ would shine on the many indigenous Ecuadorians trapped in the darkness of animism and witchcraft.
  • Pray that God would raise up a new generation of believers from the children of Ecuador to reach their own people for Christ.
  • Pray for broken lives in Ecuadorian prisons to taste the freedom and forgiveness found in Christ and to become vibrant witnesses to their fellow inmates.
  • Pray that God would provide the wisdom and resources indigenous ministries need to continue their outreaches, including support for their workers, basic necessities of food and clothing for children in poverty, and toiletry kits for newly believing prisoners.

Equip Workers for Gospel Outreach in Ecuador
Native Christian workers invited local men to the anniversary celebration of their men’s ministry, and several of them accepted Christ. Workers have established 20 home Bible groups of 10 to 15 people each where they explain the gospel and disciple new Christians. “With joy we share with you that 25 new people accepted Jesus as their personal Savior,” the ministry leader said. Workers need donations for such gospel work. Pray more people will welcome workers into their homes and open their hearts to God’s Word.
Bring the Gospel to Remote Indigenous Tribes in Ecuador
Indigenous missionaries conducted door-to-door evangelism among a tribal community and concluded the event with a gathering at the local coliseum to which all of the community was invited. “This was a great opportunity to make the gospel known in a more personal way and as a result many people received Christ Jesus as their personal Savior,” the ministry leader said. “Now many of them are attending the local church to receive the teachings of the Bible.” Donations of $60 or $120 support missionaries in their work among ethnic tribes. Pray that those who hear the gospel will give their lives to Jesus.
Break Spiritual Strongholds With The Gospel in Ecuador
A witch rules over an indigenous tribe deep in the jungle, and he threatens to kill through witchcraft anyone who attempts to introduce the gospel to his people. Despite his warnings, native missionaries have begun to visit one tribal village, and they pray that God will open the door for them to eventually share the gospel. “It is part of our Christian obligation to help members of the community in whatever is within our reach and in accordance with our level of faith,” the ministry leader said. Your donations support outreach such as this. Pray that God will open hearts to hear His message of salvation.
Strengthen New Believers’ Faith in Ecuador
Pray for new believers as they study Scripture and grow in their faith. In the last several months, 30 people gave their lives to Christ through the evangelism of local missionaries. Now, they are being discipled under the guidance of those same missionaries, who are also currently training new believers who wish to pursue ministry work and discipling leaders of the 20 home Bible studies their ministry has established. “We are doing hard work in giving them the teachings and discipleship in each of them,” the ministry leader said. Help local missionaries train and disciple new believers with such evangelism and discipleship work through donations of $25 or $50.
Raise a New Generation for Jesus in Ecuador
Pray for new pastors as they enter the mission field. Through participation in a local ministry throughout his childhood, a young boy not only gave his life to Jesus but, when he became an adult, he studied theology and became the pastor of a congregation that the ministry planted more than 20 years ago. “He has always said that his Christian formation was received while he studied the Bible in our Sunday school and also attended our church,” the ministry leader said. Your gifts support local ministries as they disciple the next generation of Christ followers.
Be the Salt of the Earth in Ecuador
Pray the Lord will soften the hearts of those who are hardened against Him. Deep in the jungle, a witch who leads an indigenous tribe has threatened to kill anyone who hopes to introduce the gospel to the people. Despite these warnings, missionaries from a local ministry have begun visiting one of the tribal villages, praying that God will open the door to one day share the gospel there as they build relationships in the community. Your donations support missionaries who risk their lives to share the gospel in remote places such as this.
